Hydrocephalus is a condition in which fluid is built up inside the brain ventricle and/or subarachnoid layer, and can cause various health conditions as well as prominent changes in one’s feature. Children with hydrocephalus often have hard times in living their daily life, let alone pursuing higher educations. Plus, many parents who have children with hydrocephalus often focus their financial needs on their children’s medication and treatment instead of education.
To answer hydrocephalus children’s needs of education, the Association is now proudly presents scholarships for children with hydrocephalus, starting from this 2011. The endowments for the scholarships have been made by various families who have family members with, or passed away because, hydrocephalus. Thus, various scholarship funds offered have brought the names of those wonderful inspirational persons.
One of the earliest scholarship funds established is Gerard Swartz Fudge Memorial Scholarships. Founded in 1994 by the Fudge family, this scholarship is a memory for Gerard Fudge, the son of the Fudge couple who died in 1992 at the age of 22, in the middle of his college experience.
Morris L. Ziskind Memorial Scholarship was established by Rebecca Ziskind in the memory of her husband, Dr. Morris Ziskind, who died from NPH (Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus) in 2001. When Rebecca died in 2005, her children established one more scholarship, Rebecca Ziskind Memorial Scholarships.
Anthony Abbene Scholarships are two scholarships generously funded by the extended family of Anthony Abbene, a teenager with hydrocephalus. Justin Scot Alston Memorial Scholarship is another scholarship fund established in a loving memory of a teenager; Justin was a very active hydrocephalic teenager with various accomplishments, who died in 2004.
Mario J. Tocco Hydrocephalus Foundation Scholarship was established by Greg and Georgana Tocco and their families in 2007 in loving memory of Greg’s grandfather, Mario, and in honor of the Hydrocephalus Foundation, Inc of Saugus, MA. Another scholarship funded by a foundation is Giavanna Marie Melomo Memorial Scholarship, which was established by Team Hydrocephalus LINY established in 2010.
The scholarships given are about $500 each, and applicants must be 17 years old with hydrocephalus. Scholarship funds must be used for an educational purpose: a four-year or junior college, a high school post-graduate year to prepare for college, technical or trade school, an accredited employment-training program or a post-graduate program. The scholarship funds may be used for tuition, books, housing or an expense directly related to the education experience.
