Psychology is one of the most growing fields in modern world, and the numbers of prospective psychologists are highly increased every year. Scholarships and grants in this area are sure to attract many applicants, but some just have no idea where to look for these scholarships in psychology, besides at their schools or colleges.
Students interested in psychology are often dismayed to find few scholarships targeted directly at psychology majors.

However, with a little effort and investigation, you can uncover financial awards that are right for your needs. Searching free scholarship listing services is a great way to find funding opportunities, but there are also a few organizations that provide scholarships, awards, and research grants specifically aimed at psychology students.

Here are some great sources to start looking for scholarships in psychology major:

1. American Psychological Association (APA)
As one of the biggest associations in the field of psychology, the APA of course maintains a list of possible funding sources for prospective psychologists at all educational levels, from undergraduates to post-doctoral students. These opportunities include scholarships, research grants, work-study, and fellowships. You can view the listings by visiting the APA website.

2. Fastweb
It is a website everyone goes for the first time when they look for scholarship information. Simply fill out a user profile to begin searching for the financial awards that are matched to your qualifications, skills, interests and needs.

3. Psi Chi
Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology, offers research grants for both undergraduate and graduate students. Available awards include the Allyn & Bacon Publishers award ($1,000) and the Psi Chi/Erlbaum Awards in Cognitive Science ($500), as well as a number of research grants and regional chapter awards. You can download award guidelines, view lists of previous winners, and submit an application online by visiting the Psi Chi website.

Masters in Applied Psychology and other advanced psychology degrees are available online for those who want to learn even more about psychology.

Life of a student is not always easy, and many students, who come from families with low financial background, often find it hard to manage their money. It is no wonder if many students often look for ways to save one buck or two, but perhaps not all of them know about refinancing of their car loans, especially because car loan is one of the most popular loans students take.

When most people think of refinancing, they think of mortgages. This might be because car loan refinancing is one of the best kept secrets in the lending industry. Your current lender, who gave you that less than desirable interest rate to begin with, surely is not going to tell you how refinancing can save you thousands of dollars over the life of your loan. After all, the more interest you pay, the more the lender benefits. The fact is, car loan refinancing is available and it does work.

By refinancing, you can get a lower interest rate, and in turn, lower your monthly payment. Even if the rate differs by only one or two points, you can still save hundreds of dollars. If you had bad credit when you got the loan, but have since improved your credit score, that 18 percent rate could be dropped to 6 or 7 percent. Depending on the size of your loan, that could save you as much as $100 every month.

Here are some car loan refinancing tips that may help:

Find a reputable lender; get as many recommendations and information as best as you can to find reputable lenders.

Get free rate quotes online and compare several car loan refinancing quotes to get the best deal

Get the lowest interest rate possible

Look over the loan terms carefully. Do not be afraid or shy to ask questions if you do not understand about some details.

Do not sign any documents you do not understand (back to the previous point). If it is possible, consult with someone who knows about this matter and ask him or her to accompany you through the process.

Whether you like it or not, women often become main target of crimes everywhere, including when they travel. Newspapers and television news are filled with horror stories about women who became criminal targets, and they sure to put some women in hesitance when it comes to plan a journey.

However, do not let these bad notions stopping you from embarking in a distant travel. Just remember some standard street safety rules (that people often forget or dismiss), and enjoy your trip.

1. Get ready with the light
Put one small flashlight in your purse or backpack wherever you go. It can help you when you suddenly must walk in a dark location or are trapped in emergency situation that makes everything around you become dark.

2. Put money in the most unexpected places
Put some stashes of cash in the most unexpected places, like in a special pocket you made in your underwear or inside your socks. Wallets or purses are the main targets of pickpockets and muggers, and money belts have been so common lately that the more experienced criminals could locate them easily.

3. Watch yourself in the crowd
Although a crowd seems to be the safest place you could be outside, be careful if you are in the middle of the crowd like folk festivals or markets; many thieves and pickpockets love crowds to blend and be obscure when they do their ‘jobs.’

4. No high heels for a while
Consider to leave your high heels for a while. During a distant travel journey, it is important for you to be able to run fast when something bad is going to happen. High heels will greatly impede you when you have to run.

5. Dress appropriately for the area
You might want to try dressing like locals if you go to a foreign place. Learn about the customary dressing of locals, and leave your revealing dresses or skin-tight t-shirts that reveal your belly button when you are in a place who do not really approve those kinds of attires, such as Muslim countries.

6. Learn to use anything
When you make a list of luggage, take a look at your things and make scenarios about what you can do with them should someone assault you. Learn to use things like a pen, pencil, hair spray bottle, or umbrella to defend yourself. Carry a pepper spray, just in case.

7. Be careful with the eye contact
We know that prolonged eye contact from a woman could be read as a flirting sign. In some developing countries, a prolonged eye contact from a woman can be an invitation to be approached, or even attract aggressive behavior from strangers. Do not give eye contact longer than necessary to a stranger in a foreign place.

8. Learn the local language…
…especially some necessary phrases you can use in emergency situation like “help!”, “call the police!” or “leave me alone!”

Experiencing stress and anxiety over student loan payment is commonly happened among students who have graduated and need to start paying off their loans. Paying off undergrad student loans as soon as possible is the best option, of course, but there are many things every student can consider in order to make the payment process more bearable.

Here are some overviews of things that should be considered in starting the student loan payment process.

1. Grace period
Many loans, such as Stafford and Perkins Loans, do not require people to pay for their loans as soon as they graduated. These loans give certain amount of time (six until nine months) that is called grace period. Since your school automatically reports your student status to the government, you should use this grace period to make decisions about your student loans as well as finding a job to help paying them off.

2. Loan Forgiveness
Loan forgiveness is often given by the government, a state agency, a non-profit organization, or a private employer to graduates in return for certain amount of service. To find out, contact your loan program or lender directly to find out if they partner with any employers that offer loan forgiveness or loan cancellations to their employees.

3. Deferment and forbearance
For students who find themselves struggling to repay their student loans, many loan providers offer (although do not guarantee) temporary deferment and forbearance. Deferment and forbearance mean that your repayments are temporarily postponed, and also possibly even reduced in the case of forbearance. Special paperwork is generally required from your lender in order to receive temporary deferment or forbearance.

4. Consolidation
While repaying your student loans, you can consider combining multiple loans into one larger loan. This will simplify your repayment responsibilities as well as lower the payment significantly. Most types of Federal student loan programs are eligible for the Federal consolidation program.

Despite numerous options of college saving options in internet websites and many other sources, many people still make the worst investment plans, leave them with money shortage when it comes to pay for college tuition. Most poor planning seems to arise from people’s desire to either outperform the more trusted investment choices or to try and find a “sure thing.” Both of these ideas, however, usually end up doing the opposite of what was intended.

Whenever you want to put your children’s college money in an investment, try your best to avoid these forms of investments:

1. Collectibles and artworks
Appreciation of works in arts can bring significant value in an investment, but this appreciation is based on people’s opinion and not tangible claim or real financial assets like in stocks. The value of artwork and collectibles can change dramatically overnight because there are no more buyers for a certain type of item. Thus, they are extremely susceptible to things like fads, trends, and recessions. Make this investment represents only a small portion in your financial portfolio, and none of your college saving.

2. High risk/high return stock market investments
Consider avoiding high-risk investments and strategies such as options, small companies, and international markets. The main reason for this is that you will have very little time to make up for investment mistakes as the start of college nears. Also, avoid any type of investment if the downside is a total loss, such as uncovered puts and calls, as well as investments in small companies in unstable third-world economies.

3. The 401k
Although your retirement plan contains investment options worthy of the college fund, this should not be the main source of college asset. The underlying investments may be acceptable, but the cost and timing of accessing the money could be disastrous for your broader financial picture. For most people, their children will be going to college within 10-20 years of their expected retirement. Taking a significant distribution from what is most people’s main retirement asset can put them back at square one with little time to catch up. Worse is the idea of taking an actual distribution from your 401k to pay for college expenses. In doing so, you will pay Federal and state income taxes on the withdrawal, as well as a 10% penalty if you are under 59 1/2. This could cut a $10,000 distribution down to $5,000 or less.

In order to ease the student’s journey, and thus attracting more students or youths to embark in fulfilling journeys, various international hostel organizations have issued hostel discount facilities for young travelers.

The Youth Hostel Association (YHA), which belongs to Hostelling International (HI), issues hostel discount cards as a part of a membership, and some independent country-based hostel organizations also offer discount cards.

The Youth Hostelling Association (also belongs to HI) has a governing body, the International Youth Hostel Federation, as well as hostels that have conformed standards according to HI rules. This way, students do not only enjoy the benefits offered by the discount cards, but can also expect nice, decent hostels to stay in as long as the hostels belong to HI; a little bit like hotel chains. Students can get full benefits of the YHA Hostel Discount Cards only by paying $28 for annual membership fee, including discounts and various deals.

Nomads, an Australian travel agency, issues Hostel Plus, a travel card that is good for $1 off a hostel bunk in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and London, as well as calling cards and discounts on Oz Greyhound buses and Great Southern Railway trains. The card can be obtained by a membership.

Hostels of Europe Discount Card offers a $2 discount for online hostel booking only, which means that there is no additional discount at the hostel itself. You can get one free with an ISE membership, and an ISIC card waives the $2 Hostelworld.com booking fee. The card alone is about $5 cheaper than either of those student-youth travel cards (over $20), which offer additional discounts.

Taxi is one of the easiest transportation means a traveler or tourist could get in foreign travel destinations. However, foreign travelers also often fall into a taxi scam, ranging from taxi fare fraud, mugging, kidnapping, to murder. Still, all those things should not stop you from using a taxi service in foreign countries. Follow these basic safety rules and you can be free from any worries.

1. Find a taxi stand
This place is usually easy to spot. Generally, only cars authorized to carry passengers are allowed to stop at these stands, meaning the taxi is as safe as that country mandates, and the driver is licensed. Look for these cab stands at foreign airports, too. Do not let yourself get carried by a suspicious, aggressive ‘taxi’ driver.

2. Memorize the taxi details
Whenever you find the taxi in the official taxi stand, make notes of the details such as logo, color, or type of the car. This way, you will have good idea about what a legitimate taxi should look, and you will be able to avoid fake taxi.

3. Check for the visible phone numbers
A legitimate taxi usually has its company’s phone numbers plastered visibly on the exterior of the car. Do not use a taxi that does not show any phone numbers, except if all taxis in that area look really same.

4. Ask for a badge
If your taxi is being stopped by a policeman, ask him politely to show his badge. However, in some places like Bolivia, fake police uniforms and badges are common. Do not get in a cab with anyone dressed in a cop uniform or showing a badge, period. Say you wil meet at the police station instead.

5. Look for a door handle
After you hail a taxi, take a look to see if it has the door handle. If not, it goes without saying that you should not use this taxi.

6. Keep your backpack close with you
If you are still not sure about the taxi you use, keep your backpack or purse (that contains valuable things like cellphone, passport and wallet) close with you, even if your luggage is put in the taxi trunk. When you sense something not right, you can jump out of the taxi and run without being bothered by a heavy luggage; at least you have your purse with you.

7. Look for a taxi meter and radio
A legitimate taxi will probably have a meter and two-way radio inside; look for either of them before you get in. A taxi may not use a meter and still be safe, but a taxi without a radio is a big no. Every taxi needs to communicate with a base; without a real radio, it may not be a real taxi.

8. Know who to call in emergencies
Knowing the local equivalent numbers of 911 will help you if you are still not sure about the taxi you use. Watch for the street signs, and always prepare yourself to jump out and run if the situation is getting worse.

There are many ways for students to pay for college, and one of the most popular financial aids comes from the military service. The Montgomery GI Bill is a financial aid program that is specifically provided for eligible people who serve in the military. The currently maximum monthly benefit is $1,368, and can be received for up to 36 months. Thus, the maximum lifetime benefit available under the Montgomery GI Bill program is currently $49,248.

The Montgomery GI Bill is open to all active members of military institution such as the Army, Navy, Marine, veterans, National Guard, and Air Guard. To get the benefit of Montgomery GI Bill, an eligible applicant must contribute $100 per month for the first twelve months of the active duty into the GI Bill program. The applicant must also present a receipt of high school diploma or equivalency certificate before applying. Plus, the applicant must have been in active duty service for at least 2 years.

There are two steps in applying for Montgomery GI Bill. First, an applicant should select the school or training program that has been deemed eligible by the Veteran’s Administration (the list is available in the VA website). Then, the applicant fills out and sends in VA Form 22-1990 to the Veteran’s Administration Regional Processing Office.

After submitting the application, if the VA does not require any additional information, the applicant will receive a letter outlining the benefits he or she is eligible for. After completing any additional requests for information, the monthly benefit check will begin arriving in the mail or by direct deposit.

Montgomery GI Bill is complex in many ways, such as from its rule classifications, calculation, and requirements. Applicants are advised to seek guidance from local Voluntary Education Services Office. Additional resources can also be found on the government’s website for the Montgomery GI Bill.

Founded in 1975, The Hispanic Scholarship Fund has granted over 80,000 scholarships worth over than $200 million.

There are four main categories of scholarships offered by the fund, which are:

1. Scholarships for Graduating Seniors
HSF offers 14 different programs with scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 per year. Many of these scholarships are funded by companies such as Wal-Mart, Ford, and General Motors, as well as foundations like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

2. Scholarships for Existing College Students
HSF offers over 20 scholarship programs providing from $1,000 to $20,000 per year for students already enrolled in college, including a number of programs for graduate students. These programs are funded by companies such as Wells Fargo, Verizon, and Macy’s, as well as numerous private foundations.

3. Scholarships for Community Colleges and Transfer Students
HSF offers seven different scholarships for community college and transfer students, ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 per year.

4. University Alliance Scholarship Programs
HSF partners with the University of Georgia (UGA) and the University of Texas at Austin (UT) to offer scholarships specifically to Hispanic students attending those two schools. Each of these scholarships provides a flat $2,500 per year.

To become available for HSF’s scholarships, students require a minimum of 3.00 GPA or higher. A student also must have U.S. citizenship or be a legal permanent resident. He or she must also have a full-time student status. Additionally, most scholarships are focused on students working towards their first undergraduate degree, though a few graduate programs do exist. Simultaneous application for Federal financial aid using the FAFSA form is also typically required.

To get more information about the scholarship programs offered, you can visit the HSF website.

When the college years finally end, many wonder about what they should do with their student loans. Others cannot think about the first practical step they could take to deal with their student loans. The first think that every student must think concerning their student loans is how to repay them back, and since a student loan will not be excused in a bankruptcy proceeding, it is important to pay it as quickly as possible

There are exit student loan counseling offices that you can visit at your schools to discuss the best plan for your student loan repayment. They will answer many basic questions about student loans and explain about the consequences if you fail to pay on time.

Basically, most student loans have a grace period of six months before the repayment process is started. This time is meant as an opportunity to find a job before you have to make payments. However, having finished your education does not mean that you are immediately put into the grace period. You should receive a letter from the company stating that you have graduated and therefore in the grace period, plus the due date of the first payment. You must contact the company if you do not receive the letter after 2 months.

If you change your address or move back to your hometown, update the company with this new information. This will make it easier for the company to inform you about any changes in your loan account. Even if you have your student loan payment directly debited from your account, you need to make sure they have your current address. You should receive tax information at the end of each year, which can save you money.

Consolidating student loan payment can lower your monthly payment, and it locks in your current interest rate. If you want to pay off your student loans at the same rate, pay the amount that you would have before you consolidated your loans. You will save money by locking in a lower interest rate.

If you have difficulty making your student loan payments contact your student loan company. They can offer temporary or hardship deferments. This will help you to avoid late fees and other penalties, as well as preventing a negative mark on your credit report.
